We left Nice today and headed down the coast, westward. Our first stop was at Antibes, a cute little town that was in the middle of their Sunday markets when we arrived. Every form of fresh produce was on offer that you can imagine. But before we got that far we walked around the water front and then followed the top of the city wall. This place is filled with big boats. We watched several, what seemed to be very large ‘yachts’ slowly maneuver themselves out of their berths and out into the open water. But once they got out there and passed some of the ‘super yachts’ parked up, they didn’t look anything more than perhaps a tender. It’s all a matter of perspective.
The buildings here are mainly white stone, and set against the blue sky that we are having today, it really is quite impressive. On the hill by the city wall there is a Museum with quite a bit of Picasso works, which we intended visiting. Once we saw the length of the queue we changed our minds, after all there is a Picasso museum in Aix en Provence, so we can go there tomorrow.
Driving further south we passed through Cannes and didn’t really find anything too exciting at all. A different story at the time of their film festivals though. A time that they live off for the rest of the year.
Our next stop today was St Tropez. Our intention here was to go for a swim, and this time our intention was fulfilled. We managed to find a spot that wasn’t too crowded, rolled up our long-johns and dived in. And to the person who told us that the Mediterranean is ‘dead, there are no fish in it’, that’s not entirely true as I stood on one. Perhaps that was the last survivor, and I just killed it!
We finally arrived at our destination, Aix en Provence (pronounced ‘X’), and then spent an hour driving around trying to find somewhere to sleep for the night. We finally found somewhere who would accept a couple of misplaced kiwi’s at a semi-reasonable price at about 7pm. It’s always a relief when you discover that there is an alternative to sleeping in the car (which we haven’t had to do yet).
