We spent most of the day in Bremen today, browsing around the town. The old quarter, ‘Schnoor’, is very cool with little old houses and shops from the 1700s squashed in against each other on cobbled alleyways and streets.
We went from here into the main Markplatz, and into St Petri Dom. A great old church with high vaulted ceilings and pillars constructed of pink, grey, and ochre stone. There are two crypts in this church, both marked as ‘Room of silence’, although when I was there, there wasn’t much silence going on. There were a bunch of kids running around screaming and yelling and turning the lights on and off.
After leaving the church and having a browse around the city centre we decided that lunch in the park was in order. So we headed down to Stadtgaben, just a few meters from the Markplatz. We ended up spending a few hours there enjoying the sunshine and a doze on the park bench. It was one of those afternoons when it seemed the right thing to do, to stop and smell the flowers.
Late in the afternoon we headed down to Monheim am Rhein, 17 kms out of Cologne, and checked into our hotel. We headed into town to find some dinner and ended up with pizza (again), although we have to say that it was very good, despite the stares from the locals. We got the impression that they don’t get many visitors mingling in this town.
