It was only a short drive to Bayeux and we decided that our first mission would be to find somewhere to sleep (a nice change from leaving it until the end of the day). Again we found a wonderful B&B out of town, with a room large enough to swing several cats, however I don’t think the cats would have stood a chance against the large St Bernard dog that greeted us at the door.
We couldn’t check in until latter in the day and so we headed in to Caen and the D-Day Memorial Museum that is there. We are now just a few kms from the landing beaches of Normandy. We spent most of the day at the museum as there was a lot there to see. In one sense we were a little disappointed as the museum seemed to cover war in general covering everything from WWII to Afghanistan. It seemed that in many ways it was spread a little thinly as nothing was really covered in any depth or detail. However they did show a very good movie about D-Day. They had some interesting exhibits like a Sherman tank, a MIG 21 plane, a mobile missile launcher and a casing for a Thermal-Nuclear missile. We did learn a few things like the fact that the Americans had planes armed with these Thermal-Nuclear missiles continuously airborne, 24/7, throughout the cold war! We also learnt that during WWII, the American war machine was churning out another ‘Liberty’ ship every 12 days. Even the technicians thought it would be one every six months.
One of the quotes that appealed to us was, ‘All war is civil war, for it is always man against man, spilling his own blood, tearing out his own entrails.’ This was written in 1712, and we still haven’t learnt from it.
