This morning we woke to blue sky but decided to head underground again anyway. We went to Gotte de Font de Gaume. This is a cave with the real deal. These are paintings from about 15-20,000 years ago. They are amazing. Not as clear and distinct as what we saw yesterday, but absolutely mind blowing. To stand in a cave that was occupied by cavemen, well what can you say … wow! You get a real sense of prehistory. When we were in Italy we experienced history, when we were in were in Denmark we discovered ancient history, now we are in France and walking in the footsteps of prehistoric man. It really is an incredible feeling.
After leaving there we discussed what we have seen over the last couple of days and agreed that we have done it in the right order. First the museum giving us the background, then the recreation giving us a sense of the scale and what it would have been like, and then today the genuine article. It doesn’t get any better than that.
We noticed in the bookshops yesterday that they stock the series by Jean Auel, being based in this area, it really brings those stories to life.
Another thing that is prominent around this area is the goose farms and Foie Gras shops, as in the force fed fat geese variety. It seems to be a specialty around here, but we weren’t keen to try any … purely on principle.
We spent the rest of the day having a Sunday drive around the area. Well we didn’t have a lot of other options as everything closes down on Sundays. Not an open bakery or supermarket was to be found, at least that was what we discovered when we were looking for some lunch. But we spent an enjoyable day driving through narrow lanes and tiny villages, of what seemed like ghost towns, there was no one to be seen. It makes you wonder what on earth people do around here on a Sunday, as the churches were all locked up too. In fact the only sign of life that we saw all day was a deer scampering off into the undergrowth as we drove past.
