We left Catania for Agrigento today, about a two hour drive. Another scorcher of a day. We started by getting a coffee and breakfast in the Piazza. No sign of the band, the stage, or any evidence at all of what we had seen last night in that same piazza. Amazing.
Heading south we did the familiar wild goose chase trying to catch up with Jenny GPS. I am sure her instructions are correct, but the interpretation is often lacking. It doesn’t help that you often don’t know what route she is taking you or what road signs you should actually be looking for. On the plus side of this you see parts of the city that you wouldn’t have otherwise, and you see countryside that is reserved for the locals. When did get onto the autostrada we once again saw large expanses of very dry beige countryside, with splashes of yellow (not sure if this is a crop or a weed), with accents of green olive trees. Very photogenic with the brilliant blue sky that we have today, but of course stopping on the autostrada is forbidden, so you will have to take our word for it.
Our main objective in visiting Agrigento was to visit the valley of the temples. Along a ridge before you get to Agrigento there is a row of five ancient temples in various states of disrepair. But these things are ancient and very impressive, especially viewed on a day like today with a perfect blue sky. One of the temples (Tempio della Concordia) is almost complete. It is everything that you imagine one of these temples to be like. Very picture book. Evidentally these are lit up at night and from the photographs that we have seen, they look amazing. We spent several hours in the heat walking around here, before heading for camp.
This is the first time that we have booked into a camping ground and it has turned out to be ‘real camping’ where you need to provide everything yourself. But it is home, for tonight anyway.
