Went to San Gimignano for the day today, only about an hours drive away. Very cool hill top walled city which is a tourist mecca in central Tuscany. This town has 14 towers built by the various gentry over the centuries. At one time evidently there were 72 towers. A long history here, and quite a powerful town in its time, until the plague wiped half of the population out. What we saw was a very cool medieval town, the kind that we are becoming used to, with apparently no planning when it came to a street plan. Little streets heading in all directions, with stone building, which if you look at the stone work look like they have been built and added onto at various stages over the last couple of thousand years.
Judging by the amount of tourists it looks like they make a good living out of them (but not from us). Although they do serve a very fine spit roasted pork on a bun at the market on a Saturday morning (that was my lunch). Spent most of our time there meandering around the multitude of little stores of every description, and we finished up by circumnavigating the outside of the old town wall.
