DUBROVNIK - Croatia (Mon 29 June)

We walked into the Old city today and went for a walk around the top of the city walls (about a two hour walk). Very cool. Looking out over a sea of terracotta rooves. As you first enter the city you are confronted by a large circular 15th century fountain. Perfect for a hot day like today.

The walls themselves seem to snake up and down encircling the medieval city. You can see in places that it has required repair due to the various bombardments that they have received over the years. In one corner you look down on what appears to be the bombed out remains of a building, and you wonder if it has been deliberately left this way as a reminder for future generations. You can’t help but imagine what it must have been like during those times of siege. In amongst this you see washing lines, a basketball court, pots of herbs, and you are reminded that amongst this backdrop, life goes on.
We finished the day today by going for a swim. What from a distance seemed like a perfectly fine sandy beach, on closer inspection turned out to be white stones and rocks. We had underestimated the mission it is to get from the safe confines of your beach towel into the water and back again, without looking like a complete plonker limping over stones. There are two things that rule the waves here, Speedos and Crocs, neither of which we were quite prepared for. Actually ‘Speedos’ would be considered classy, the ones we saw looked more like undies. Despite this we saw the twin brother of ‘Charles Atlas’ posing in his briefs, and the guy beside him made it look like the ‘before and after’ shot. Me in my boardshorts, I was definitely in the minority, but I’ll accept that as a good thing.
