We went up the hill from Dubrovnik for photos on the way out of town. There is a large cross that gets lit up at night up there and an old fortress looking structure. This was part of the defense system and commemoration of the ‘Homeland’ war. Most of the structure itself is inaccessible, but the views are great, although it is very hazy today. Quite strange up there, very rocky with plants and shrubs grabbing at every crevice and gap that they can find. There are little groups of houses in ones and twos and ruins of old walls and structures that have become integrated with the landscape and subsequent development.
On to Split. After everything that we have heard we are looking forward to this. Heading north we were once again going through the transformations of landscapes. Steep cliffs, rocky hills, broken by an area of flat lush plains that are cultivated with various fruits. The rock faces along the highway have some serious rock fences going on, it makes you wonder how often these rock falls happen.
We arrived in Split and went to our accommodation, unfortunately this was a bit of a let down. We had landed in another ash tray, but more on that later. We had intended to stay here four nights, but changed our minds and only stayed for three. We would rather spend our time somewhere more pleasurable.
We went for a walk into the old town, mainly to get out of our room. This city is very cool. The old Diocletian Palace building, with its huge old vaulted walls, the long promenade, the ambiance and life. It just seems such a great place to be. It really comes to life though in the late afternoon and evening. It appears that the whole city comes out in the evening for a stroll and socialize along the promenade. There was the summer concert series going on while we were there, and so every night there were street performers, music performances, folk singers and dancers, etc. There was a stage set up at the Northern end of the promenade in the Trg Republike ‘Prokurative’. The first night we were there, they had a guest cellist leading a full symphony orchestra in performance for the evening. After the main event she gave a few solo, electric cello, rock numbers with interpretive dancers as accompaniment. Very cool.
This was repeated every night with different performers. However we did feel at times that some of the performers were like L&P, ‘World famous in Croatia’, as everyone got very excited about them, but we unfortunately we didn’t understand a word of it or recognize who they were. Whoever they were, we saw some very passionate performances.
